The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven R. Covey ![]() This is one of those books that once you've read it, you think to yourself "My God! How did I ever achieve anything before?" Or... "Ha! To think of all the time I've wasted banging my head against the wall trying to get stuff done throughout my life!" Or... "No wonder I never really got the results I wanted." This book is totally transformational. At first glance, it seems to be a book aimed at managers. And while it's true that many of the examples revolve around the life of a corporate manager, to think that this is some sort of Management, or even Time-Management book (which I've heard it described as), would be to sell it way, way too short. A quick peek at the sub-title reveals something extremely important about the message—and significance—of this book: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change
This book is about how to take charge of yourself. Everything else flows from there. If you don't have control over yourself, how can you hope to have control over your use of time each day? Or to take it back to the idea that this is a book about corporate management, if you don't have control over yourself, how can you possibly manage a group of people effectively? And that's the key concept in this book: Effectiveness. We all do our jobs each day, bumbling along (mostly, I'd say), doing a "good enough" job. Sometimes we even do an excellent job. But at what cost? It's not so good if your apparent "excellence" robs you of the time to do the things that you really enjoy. Or that are, frankly, more important. Or that stress you out and have you running around like a dog chasing its tail. Or up until 3am, a candidate for burnout, ulcers and a heart attack. This is not an effective use of your time, i.e. your LIFE! Learn the 7 Habits and apply them to your life. The change will be monumental, trust me! Just the point about "Quadrant 2" would be enough to change most people's lives significantly for the better, I think. And this is just part of one chapter! The whole book runs to 300 and something pages! Grab your copy of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People now! Note: This book is on the "run don't walk" list, along with: Devour these books and courses and apply them to your life and you will never look back! It WILL take a while for it all to be internalised and for you to start doing it all automatically. And for this reason I actually go back to these 4 books and re-read them and re-do the exercises in them about every 18 months to 2 years. I recommend that you do the same. Sooner or later you will start to apply these principles to your life without having to think about it and the results will be staggering. People will look at you as if you pulled Excalibur from the stone. They won't believe that you're the same person. And neither will you! You'll get SO much more done, and the ideas will just start pouring out of you like a dam that's broken its walls. You'll start enacting these ideas and finding ways to make them happen despite already having plenty to do and people telling you they can't be done. Here's to your success! P.S. There is also an audio version, which as I suggested for the audio version of Psycho-cybernetics, is really good as revision, once you've been through the book and done all the exercises. Don't try to learn all the material from just listening to it. Instead, get the book, work through it, and then if you have a commute each day, make effective use of that time!
